not to be a smarta$$, but my solution was to replace the POS factory stereo altogether. get something with an aux input for your mp3 player. hard wired, not FM modulator. might as well replace the speakers while you're at it too, drop an amp or two and some low end in there.

I have been having the same problems with my tape deck also.. I used to take the cassette and tap it on the gear shifter a few times because I thought it was the adapter. Then after replacing it and realizing that it was the tape deck I just take the cassette and once it is in.. I kinda move the cassette around with my finger until it pops into place...
But I have realized that I am going to have to replace the deck with an Ipod
compatible player... I haven't decided which one to get thought...
Good luck to you ...

You hit the nail right on the head, that has been my fix so far.

I've had this happen to me also. Mind u I was driving my 99 4 Runner, so completely different make of vehicle. So its not unusual, i've had it happen a few times. The stock head unit in the 4 Runner, I believe is made by infinity??? Maybe just a coincidence idk?
