I am wondering if I bought the wrong rack and pinion for my M. I purchased the non-speed proportional due to the fact that I have a regular non-special, non-PHP M. I found a good deal for a mechanic to install it but I want to be sure I have the correct part before he pulls my front end apart. If someone could run my VIN and let me know which rack is required I would be much appreciative... The last 8 are YH319488. Thank you very much...

There is a sticky in the all around topics for a parts catalog that has vin information included in its first page. You can also tell if you have a PHP car a few other ways, try doing a search.

Thank you for the info. Just a quick clarification: If the vehicle is non-PHP, does that mean the rack should be non-speed proportional ? thanks again.

The only hint I found in either the parts book or the service manual is this note, NOTE: Sales Code SBC = Speed Proportional Steering, w/16“ Wheel & Handling Package. If I had to take a guess I would say you have a standard rack on your non php car. I hope some one else can chime in with a little clarification. That being said I don't see why either rack wouldn't work in your car. If I am seeing things correctly the only difference is the ratio.

thank you Nitrohog. I certainly appreciate the information. The car goes in this weekend and hopefully the rack will fit. I will post the outcome...

I bought the correct rack after all. I presume all non-PHP cars with 17 inch wheels have the standard non-speed proportional rack. Anyway, car runs out like new. Paid $275 for the rack install, new inner tie rod bushings, plus back brakes. I think I did OK...
