The acid raindrop stains on my car's windows are so bad it's attrocious. More than 10 feet away they look beautiful but up close and they are horrible. Really hurts a car that is already 8 years old and I've tried everything.

I was wondering how much it would cost to just replace the two front and two rear windows on my car.

I had two old, musty and very cloudy headlamps for a long time making my car look old and tired. When I replaced them with brand new lamps, it made my car look practically brand new. I feel the same could be done by replacing my car's windows.

I have experience replacing them as the clips the windows are glued onto broke off on my driver's side. I bought new clips and glued them onto the same old glass myself. I can do the work myself and I am guestamating the glass runs about $200 each. Anyone know for sure what they would cost??

Has anyone here recently replace the glass on their car? I wanted to know how the job came out. Did it make a big difference? Was it worth doing the job?? Thanks.

Try seeing if a glass place will do a polish on the glass.

good luck on that. most shops dont want to polish glass these days.

Your best bet is to goto http://autopia.org/forum/ and search the services area to find a pro that polishes cars.

You would ask for a glass polish along with a entire car polish/wax. I need to get this done as I have a large scratch on the outside of my passenger window. It pisses me off since its half an inch thick and 3 inches long. Highly visible even through the tint.

Lexus, check with your insurance agent. Sounds like a safety issue, some companies will arrange for glass compay to compoun/polish/repair small defects so they don't have to pay out as much for broken glass (comprehensive).

A Google search got me to a site that finds 3 places that will replace the windows for me near where I live. They all average $250 apiece. I wonder if they would sell me just the glass?? Hey, money is money even though I know most of their profit comes from the install.

So I ordered the stuff from the link you posted above. Don't you know I walk into a auto speciality shop and they have stuff made by "No Touch" that does the same thing. I actually use "No Touch" to keep my tires nice and black so I bought some and buffed it hard into my windows. It took some of the edge off and the windows aren't so terribly scorn with spots but all the rainspots are still there. I just hand applied too so maybe that was the difference.

I ordered the griotsgarage stuff AND 3 cotton applicators and I WILL machine apply their product and see what happens.

Coinkidinkly...

...my home town newspaper had this in a syndicated helpful hints column:

"I read your column on cleaning hard-water spots off windows and wanted to put in my 2 cents. I use a product called Lemi Shine, which is actually made to work in your dishwasher to clean hard-water buildup. It's available at retailers like WalMart. This stuff works great."

Hmm - now that I re-read that, it sounds like it removes mineral buildup. What you have may be a chemical etching of the glass instead. Anyway - it's out there now. May or may not work for your problem.

Great post Bill. I love off label applications of things. Well, it IS closely related so I am off to Walmart. Still waiting for my griotsgarage stuff to come in by standard mail.

I think hand applying may be the difference so I am waiting for the mail order to come in and I will machine apply all products and see what works best. Will report back results and maybe I'll also take pics with my cell to post.

WELL SPEAK OF THE DEVIL!!!!!

Guess what came in the mail not an hour after my above post?!?!

Of course I have to rush outside and try it on my driver's side rear window.

First thing I learned is that it is much better to do many small circles when applying then just a few larger circular motions. Found an old t-shirt to buff off the haze and I must say it made a noticeable difference. Never completely removed any of the spots which I pretty much assumed. I had to walk over to the passenger's side rear window to compare and it is definitely worth doing and it's gonna take a lot of elbow grease to do it as I have no machines to help.

So tomorrow I will do another window but I won't do them all at once. Take my time, do it right. I am curious to see if I do the same window again would it make a difference?? I am going out right now to take a pic of the windows and I guess you guys can decide. Be right back.

Picture was impossible, too much reflection and even at night it would be too hard. It requires a quality digital camera which I don't have access to. I'll make some effort to maybe borrow someone else's camera before I knock out the other windows.

Reason I'm making such a fuss about pics is that I always appreciate it when someone else takes their time and helps me out with my problems that I wanna show them that their efforts and/or ideas worked out well and REALLY helped out. Try to send back a positive vibe to those that took their time to help me. Thanks.

Polarizing lens should take care of that.

Well, my shoulders are aching and I still got tons of rainspots on my windows. I know if I'm gonna be happy, I'm gonna have to replace these windows.

It's just like the old headlamps I used to have. Once I replaced them, it woke my car right up and I feel the same will happen if I replace all my windows. Gonna cost $200 each PLUS I gotta retint the rears and it doesn't include the huge rear window either.

All together, replacing ALL windows (except windshield) and tinting the rear three is gonna cost a grand but I think it would be worth it.

I'm gonna own my M outright by Jan '08 and I wanna have two years of no payments so I just wanna have two GREAT years of no payments on a great looking car. Just because my car is 8 years old doesn't mean it has to look like it's 8 years old.

If anyone has any hook ups on getting discount glass that I can install myself please post here. Thanks.

Lexus -

I am parting out a 2000. I have all the glass and it is in very good shape. The windshield is new.

Where do you live ? Will this glass fit ?

Chris
