My 2001 300M has a very bad top end engine noise/rattle. Engine starts, runs, idles. I bought the car in this condition because I have a 97 intrepid parts car with a 3.5. I have subsequently been told that the cast iron block engine will bolt up but will not run with the 2001 electronics. Is this correct or is there anyone who has made this work. I would like to complete this project without spending another $1000 on an HO engine.

There are a lot of differences between the two engines, it's not really worth it to try and swap it out.

There are a few things, but the rockers can be noisy on these cars. You can replace the whole rocker assembly for less than $500 which isn't too bad. A good quality oil filter helps lessen the noise at startup.

Listening to it making the video, it now sounds like a rod knock to me.
I found a 2002 300M engine with 135k for $500.
Are there any issues that I should be aware of when using the 2002 engine in my 2001 300M?

Finally got access to paypal account and got my membership. I didn't realize that the article that you suggested I read, Ken, was what I was asking in my post with my video. So thanks again. Glad I joined! I think I'll look for an 01 engine.

An 01 engine will be plug-n-play. 02 engine will need the 01 flywheel, plenum, EGR system, wiring, etc. It does sound like that engine is done, does not at all sounds like lifter noise.

I found a 99 300M with about 100k miles that's been hit for $300. Engine runs and sounds OK. Will the 99 engine be an easy (plug and play) install in my 2001 300M?

just change out the tb/wp for new if you don't know when it was last done.
otherwise, it's a bolt in.
