I'd like people's opinions of what they consider to be the best year for the 300m or 300m special and why.

If you could select your vote above and then just write a statement about one or two reasons why you thought it was the best year.

What are the features or characteristics of the 300m that made the year you chose the best year? What does it have that the other years didn't? What were the upgrades if any? What feature do you like best for the year you chose?

Usually the concensus has been the
2001 300M with the Luxury Package
or the
2002 300M Special

Most reasonings due to the number of bells and whistles before any decontenting occurred.

X2...been talked about a few times.

I like the Special for what it is, but I would love to own an '01 Lux with PHP

A would go for the 02 instead of the 01. Only because the O2's have the updated electronics. The 01's were a transistional year the car does not have the 99-00 electronics, but doesn't have the 02-04 complete set either. True it had almost all the items (only loosing a few) before the real decontenting begain. I will say this if you find a good vehicle in excellent shape go for it. The items (mostly cosmetic) missing are easily added.
Each year has it's good points (yes, even the 99's) I still like the OTIS display better with it's better compass, for example over the EVIC which has far more functions. The interior knee trim (padded) instead of plastic, and rear seat adjustable headrests. Even the front seat headrests are more adjustable. So you will gain and loose some with each year/model. But it is good bones that you are after.

I chose the 99 because I think its the most unique out of the bunch. i.e. fish scale shifter, black trim pieces (A pillars dash panels on the sides, mirror switch)

Though I would love to have either a 2000 forest green or a 2001 black on black with the luxury package with the 1999-2000 chrome 17" wheels like I have now.

I like the 300M special though I think that they are not as comfortable as the traditional 300M. And with me being fat, I like a comfy seat.

That is why I added my 99 seats to my 03 special. Compfy and sporty. :)

This sounds like a personal problem, Bill :!:

It is also one that can be easily rectified :P

Could you post a picture of the 99 seats compared to the 00-04? It would be cool to see them side by side and notice the visual differences. Not sure when I'll be able to sit inside of a 99 m. I have a 2000.

The difference in the seats is not in the year manufactured but the difference in the base models vs. the waterfall seats in the Specials.

Early 02 decontenting was minimal and easily retro fitted. As Michael pointed out the 02 electrics beat out the 01 and down for me.
Luxury Package (01,02, name changed to value package 03,04) Wood wheel w/audio controls, real California Wood, EVIC (in place of OTIS) including TPMS, Touring Suspension.

Due to evolution (elimination of problems) the 2004 is the best year.

Someone once said this before

"The best year for a 300M is the year YOU own!!"

01 red with lux package (my vote)

or 02 black special (I own)

I actually like the ride of the base M (own one as well) --special is a bit harsh imho
